Since I work in retail, hopefully I can shed a little bit of light onto this subject (also seems fitting that my first post is about video games).
As far as sales go -- at least in this area -- the Wii is crushing the PS3. We've honestly had no availability issues for the PS3 since shortly before Christmas. One shipment (which had 20 PS3s) came in before the new year and we just recently sold the last console. The PS3 has also been taken off the Replenish option for now; so they're not even trying to fill the shelves back up.
I believe every shipment of Wiis that we've had in has sold out the same day. When I left work we had 10 left out of the 20 we started selling at midnight. It's very likely that those 10 will be gone by the time I return to work tonight.
I'd say in this store the Wii has probably outsold the PS3 4 to 1.
As far as playing the Wii, simple wrist motions are all you need. The advertisements are over-dramatized, though you can play like that if you choose to.
Personally I own an Xbox 360 and a Nintendo Wii; I really enjoy the combination of the two and wouldn't consider buying a PS3 for quite a while. The only game I'm remotely interested in is Resistance: Fall of Man, and I've seen our demo unit frozen over half the time it's running. The day the Sony rep. first set up the demo unit I think it froze 39 times. Not exactly sure on the number, but it seemed outrageous. Also, having went through a couple PS2s, I'm not exactly sold on Sony's quality control.
