If the person you are commissioning offers inked sketches but doesnt usually ink their own work professionally, what do you do?

Do you get them to do the inks as it is their piece, or would you rather try and reach out to an inker they are professionally associated with?

Agreed with Ghost on this. Most artists that don't usually ink will not offer to ink if they don't really want to do it. If they offer, they probably do it enough to do a good job. As a fail safe, I always review prior works of an artist to see quality, etc. so this is a good rule of thumb for any commission.

Another factor for me is pricepoint of the commission. If it is a $100 piece I don't think too much about it and let the artist do what they want. If it is $500 I would put more thought into the inking question.

I've had inkers add a detailed background and then sign as inker/background artist - made some pieces really pop

This is really a to each his own kind of thing. I would never ask an inker to do that. To me the penciller is the guy who draws the piece. I don't like an inker adding background, but it's a personal thing with me

I tend to think the same way and haven’t done this with anything of my own but I can imagine that it can be done successfully. If you have examples of an inker adding background that you were happy with, post it here – would love to see it

I'd love to have Gerhard do a background on one of my pieces. That project is just outstanding.

In the context we have been discussing the inker would draw background and ink the whole thing and the viewer would have no idea who drew what and be left with the impression that the penciller drew a full blown piece when the reality is that he only drew the central charcater

this is the piece I am in the process of getting, and that gave me the idea.

How common is it these days for the backgrounds to be printed and the figures to be inked?

I know this is a hit to the long term value.
