Banner's just a man... toxic air (CO2, knock-out gas, etc) would knock him out.

However, most of the personas of the Hulk would manifest before any real harm would come to Banner, as Hulk doesn't want any harm to come to himself while he's stuck in Banner's form.

Depending on which version of the Hulk is currently active, Banner might not surface for months and/or years.

Oh.. the Hulk generally holds his breath when in space/underwater. He's been in space/at a planet's core with sulfurous fumes/etc more than once with no breathing apparatus. He can hold his breath indefinitely, but he is holding his breath. Hulk's healing factor would keep gases that would kill a normal man from killing him, though... and he would be able to endure them because of it.
I know he's been written as riding around on top of a spaceship/battling deep in the ocean with no breathing apparatus before, but I'm still of the camp that says he does require oxygen every so often to endure.

Thank you for that! Now I have more pondering to do. I still think Storm could take him with strategic planning and pure anger/power....

oh wait, that sounds like something a Batman person would say

Peter David did that!?
Damn, and I always thought his Hulk run was near flawless...
Guess he goes down a notch on my "favorite writers" line-up.

Not his first run writing the Hulk but years later when he came back to write the book.

Issue #19.1 as mentioned, and as with all the other #.1 issues, is designed as a standalone story that acts as a perfect jumping on point for potential new readers. Almost a taste test so to speak
It's just that I picked up 19.1 out of the blue because of the AOA cover but i was curious about what led up to this so I flipped through the pages of 19 and there didnt seem to be anything remotely related to 19.1

the .1 issues are just one shots...as other have said "jumping on points"

Nothing leads up to them...nothing comes of them...its why I usually pass on them as they're useless. marvel just trying to get another $2.99 off people

Ah, gotcha mate

As PI said, they are usually just one shots that give a general "feel" of the title, almost like a sampler issue that you can pick up without needing too much backstory.

That said, last week's X-Men: Legacy issue #260.1 was the opposite (way to confuse everyone Marvel) it was the first non Mike Carey written issue in over six years, and really established where Gage and Co plan on taking the book. It was fantastic
