Back before his stint illustrating Alan Moore's FROM HELL, Eddie Campbell was already establishing himself as a writer/artist with BACCHUS.
The series, miniseries, and specials ran from the late '80s through mid '90s from a variety of publishers. It tells the story of the ancient god of revelry, now an old man wandering the Earth, but still possessing his powers. He primarily tells stories of his life, or the development of society or the arts, and he occasionally interacts with other surviving immortals, such as Theseus and Hermes. The way it integrates mythology, literature, and history is very reminiscent of Neil Gaiman's SANDMAN, and a great read in its own right. The whole thing will be reprinted in two volumes in 2010, so take a chance and check it out. I can't recommend it highly enough.
