"2. The detail and attention put into weathering the prototype is pretty much impossible to recreate from a manufacturing point of view."
On pieces like these. Especially for Chronicle. You either get it right or don't do it at all or you just have a low standard.
Here's the fact. Almost all the stuff from Hot Toys, Enterbay and Kotobukiya have EXCELLENT weathering and those are what? PVC and Vinyl? It can be done. I don't collect stuff from those companies anymore more but they sure knows how to paint their production action figures.
For CAIN MKII. He's doing A LOT of work to get his Cain to where he prefers.
I'm fine doing retouches but not because I have to for reasons like this.

Then maybe now is a good time to watch R2 again

You might be right my friend
I'm working and repainting Cain not because I'm unhappy with the product delivered by CC but more because I'm building my own vision of it.
The decals been too heavily smoked could be a disappointment.

Is the weathering sealed? I'm guessing it will be, but If not, you could lighten it in areas you feel it is too heavy.

It's not sealed. But very hard to remove or just lighten up without damaging the surrounding or underlying paint and decals. I've done a little, and dry brushed over some areas with pretty good results, but still...

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Umm... There is no shot in R2 where Cain looks super clean. Unless you have a screen shot you can show where he looks brand new? :/

We never saw all of him "brand new", but pretty clean in these:
That's the level of weathering I'd like to have seen. Subtle, soft dark shading around joints, seams and edges.
