Recommended Guardians of the Galaxy run?

Don't know much about this property, but the movie looks fun. Just wondering if there's a go-to run of the comic, and from what era, that I could read after I see the flick?

There's only a handful of trades to have the whole Abnett & Lanning run, which is in my opinion superior to the current series by Bendis (not that it's bad either). It was capped off by the Thanos Imperative, but if you're going to read them you might want to read the Annihilation and Annihilation: Conquest minis that lay all of the groundwork for the Guardians series. They were all published in the last decade or so.

Great advice. Both mini-series set up the groundwork for the current cosmic situation at Marvel. Omnibus about to hit for Annihilation. If you're looking for great Marvel space stuff, it doesn't get any better than these two series.

Also vote for Thanos Imperative, there are a LOT of characters and goings on, I read it as it came out and I had to often look back at the last issue to refresh. Obviously a straight through read shouldn't be a problem.

Marvel's releasing some "complete collections" starting in early August. I've never read any stories of this new team, but I've been considering getting on board with these:

While it's nice the series is back in print.

I would have preferred the oversized hard covers to come back in print instead, the hard covers are so much nicer.

I've been looking for a good place to start reading GOTG, too. I've flipped through some of the Annihilation books and the art was so bad, I couldn't bring myself to read it. Art is a major part of comics to me. If it sucks, I'm not buying it. No matter how good the story is.

Thanks for this. I too was looking for a good point to familiarize myself with the property. Having said that I am typically not a fan of Marvel's cosmic fare, is the storytelling compelling enough to draw in a DD/Iron Fist kind of guy like myself?

It's a bit more of a grim and gritty version of the space faring Marvel characters, than had been done previously. Most of the characters are well developed and it's packed full of action and intrigue.
