Well handguns are more likely used as they were are not designed for hunting wildlife. When your constitution was written America was still a wilderness and guns were mainly used for hunting and fighting the natives.

Nobody should watch Red Dawn regardless of which way your gun views slant because it's really terrible and about as realistic a scenario as Transformers.
