Arrow 9-11 5 years later...

It seems like it was just yesterday for some and like nothing ever happend to others... I am at work today over in New Jersey and the mood is very normal... No major mention of 9-11 and for some reason it seems as if it never happend... I mean sure there are a few who are worried about attacks since this location is in Chemical Alley in Newark but other then a handful it seems its business as usual... and I think its messed up that its that way but what can one do... Anyways I am also surprised to see that there are no threads on here about it...

But I just really want to take this time and send out my prayers to loved ones of all those who were lost on that tragic day...

I was over in London when the planes flew into the World Trade Center. Here is my e-mail from the morning after. It is eerie reading my words. I had another long e-mail I wrote when I finally got home. I am trying to put my hands on that and will post it later if I find it.

=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
Subject: Report from London

Thank you very much for the e-mails. I will pass some of the information
on, as the first hand stuff really gives you added perspective.

For those of you who don't know, my Cousin Ted is a Fireman in Long
Island. My Cousin Jack is a Doctor with the NYPD. Both are expected to
be part of the rescue efforts today. Say a prayer for them.

My cousin Ed just graduated from West Point this year. I have not heard
if he has been pulled in for any assignment related to this incident. Say
a prayer for Ed as well.

When I first heard about it, I thought it was a joke. When websites would
not load, I started to think it might be real. When I finally got through
on MSNBC, I could not believe the headline was really there. A few
minutes later someone said something about a second plane. Then the
Pentagon. Then Pittsburgh. With each new revelation, it just seemed very
surreal. I could not call out to the States at all and after a few hours
of not hearing anything I was close to being in tears. I was very
relieved when David replied to an e-mail I had sent him.

I couldn't get a line out to the States all day yesterday. I was getting
e-mail, though, and a Jen was nice enough to get a call home for me to
tell Deb and the kids that I was all right. I didn't know the call got
through until much later in the night, but it meant a lot to Deb to get
the call.

I did finally get a call out. My friend Ian lent me his cell phone and I
finally got through around 11 pm London time. After trying to dial all
night, I got to say "Hi" for about 1 minute before the battery died. (I
called back successfully when I got to the hotel.

After we left the office, we went to the Stage Door (the local pub). The
TV was on in there and they kept replaying the plane flying into the side
of the World Trade Center. I had brought over a bottle of Yukon Jack for
my friends over here to try, as they have nothing like it. Yesterday was
the day to break it out. It is a good thing none of us were driving.

My friends Scott and Glenn (from Oz [Australia]) as well as Glenn's wife
kept me company for the evening. I had been promising Glenn to bring him
over to this Blues club I like to go to. We decided that last night would
be a good night for some Blues. The club is the size of about three large
walk-in closets, and makes a mean plate of Jambalaya. The bar staff were
nice enough to play a Roomful of Blues CD for me before and after the
first set of the night. Everyone had a great time and except for my
trying to dial home every ten minutes, it was a good diversion to forget
about the events of the day.

Here were excerpts from some comments I received yesterday -

David says:
"Not trying to be dramatic here...
but since the World Trade towers are only 1M down we were out in front
watching the whole thing. The buildings are now totally destroyed and the
skyline empty.
The people have not been too panicked as of yet but the general feeling is
that there is more to come - be it in NYC, California who knows."

"We went down to try to donate blood around 11:30AM. The lines are now
around the block. 3-5 hour waits at a minimum for the next three days --
and that was at 1:30PM. From 11:30 to 1:30 they took a total of 10 people.
The places are just not staffed or equipped to deal with this."
"I am going to try to get out of here and head up to see if any trains are
running. The website and phones are down."

David and his wife Nancy both made it home last night. I'm not sure if
the trains were running, or if they walked, but they got there.

My friend Steve says:
"My father is actually in Washington DC today staying near the White House
(he
was actually supposed to go to a Texas BBQ at the White House today). He
is
fine but says he doesn't know how or when he'll get home. He says DC is
like
an armed camp with fighter planes and troops with machine guns
everywhere."

I was just at a Phillies game with my friend Tony last week. He says:
"Amazing how much things change in a week. As tragic as this was
(assuming it is over), it could have been much worse. Reports have been
circulating that the jetliner that crashed outside of Pittsburgh was
intentionally crashed by the pilot when he learned that the intended
target
of his airplane was either Limerick Nuclear Power Plant in Philly or Three
Mile Island in Pittsburgh. Also, the downward imploding of the WTC---as
opposed to an outright topple---prevented the further destruction (and
death) of it's collapse into many other buildings."
"Regardless, this is an outright act of war, something that will change
our
lives. The nation is in shock, but soon the shock will dissipate and anger
will set in. I hope that this anger unites, rather than divides us. To me,
it is utterly baffling why anyone would want to attack a country which
stands for all that's good in the world....we're by no means perfect, but
we're closer to perfection than any nation in the course of history. Today
I am more proud than ever to be an American, and I know you are too."

I had heard that the Pittsburgh plane was going for Camp David. Tony's
explanation probably makes more sense as the President was not actually at
Camp David.

On a lighter note, my wife says:
"Thank you for having Jennifer call me. I was a wreck. I hope your okay, I
sure do miss you, but I wouldn't want you flying anywhere right now
anyways.
EVERYTHING ON tv makes you sick it is such an awful feeling. Do you think
that all this happened because I actually finally after how many years
scheduled a dentist appointment?"

On the phone Deb said people were saying Sept. 11 is 911 and that was why
they chose that for the day. Has anyone heard anything more about the
timing? Good luck with your dental appointment today.

My Step-Sister-In-Law Vickie lives in the Cos Cob section of Greenwich, CT
- very close to the NY border and says:
It is awful here. So many people work in NYC that live here - we are
awaiting news on a few. We have a crisis center set up at the school
today and tomorrow. They closed our office here in Stamford because of a
few government companies on site (which is fine with me all I wanted to do
was go home and hide)."

Bruce says:
"I was on my way to Detroit this morning myself and they stopped the plane
and off loaded us. Assure our friends in the UK that we will re build the
towers, find out who is responsible and punish them accordingly. It is
pretty tough to get the American people pissed off but this may be the
exception."

Regina says:
"Thankfully we have no one in the air."

A lot of us fly as we are a consulting company. This was very good news
to hear.

This morning, the subway was eerie. The trains were still loaded, but no
one said a word. There were no conversations - just a lot of looking at
the pictures in the paper.

It will take a while to sort my flights out - I don't think airlines will
know where to start until the airports reopen. I'll let everybody know
when I here something. For now I am assuming that Saturday morning is
still a go. When I took off from Newark to Bradley the Saturday before
last, we flew right over the Statue of Liberty and the Twin Towers on a
sight flight plan. I think that practice by the airlines has just been
ended. I am not looking forward to seeing the big blank spot in the
skyline when I land at Newark this time.

If you hear anything else, feel free to send me a note and let me know
what is going on. This is especially true if we turn someplace into a
giant smoking crater.

Nice touch CK and thanks for posting the e mail Madjazz.

My Train was not that full this morning going into Penn.
(They had a electrical Fire this morning and some trains were delayed)
It seems quiet in the city today like a lot of folks took off today.
This is just one of those days that you just don't feel like working but the American Spirit is to move on continue, and not let setbacks hold us back.
Keeping in mind forever those we lost.

Didn't really intend to write that it just kinda came out when I was talking about my commute.

god bless those that perished in the attacks that day. May their spirit always shine.

if you have not donated to the memorial funds I would ask that you do. All three of the sites are having memorials done and they have not gotten their full funding as of yet.

we can never forget.

Never forget.

"Listen, and listen to me very carefully. I'm on Flight 11. The
airplane has been hijacked." At 8:45, just before the crash, she said
"I see the water. I see the buildings. I see buildings," then after a
pregnant pause, a quiet "Oh, my God!"

It was my brothers funeral that day, I switched the TV on half an hour before we were due to leave, and it said a plane had hit one of the towers. When we got back, I switched the TV on, both towers had come down. Strange, surreal day.

CK, I posted something over in the comics section. I used to work in Tower 2, 34th floor, moved out of NYC to take a job in KC. When this happened both my wife and I realized I could have been in that tower when the plane hit if we hadn't moved.

Nice post. It seems business as usual in my office as well. No one here has brought it up, including myself. I actually pinned and red/white/blue ribbon to my shirt this morning but then took it off thinking people would think I was just trying to make a statement. You know what? I wish I'd left it on.
