There is quite a few books. There are some comics/graphic novels but generally not too many. The games are nice but as Silas said they break with the lore a lot for balance sake. The Space Marine game is very well liked as well but again doesn't keep with the lore that well.
And no Gabriel Angelos doesn't really matter. The Blood Ravens chapter was made for the games, they were somewhat popular after the first game, even got some minis for the tabletop. However the 3rd game went over the bend and made him look like that along with cartooning the rest as well. Also the books series written about the Blood Ravens were retconned (they were written by the Black Library's worst author and were ass) and DOW3 was a resounding failure of a game.
If you want to see a real important character (done well) check out HMO's Roboute: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_c...&v=knXtsK0Hgp4
Some good starter books are the Eisonhorn omnibus, the Gaunt's Ghosts series and Watchers of the Throne (which introduces the new changes where the setting has moved forward). A personal favorite of mine is the Gothic War series. Also the Commissar Cain books are very well liked and are pretty lighthearted for 40k.
The 40k universe is really quite large, and there aren't just books from the Imperium's perspective (though they are the majority). If you prefer one of the other factions there are good books for pretty much everyone (except the orks which while everyone likes the orks it's difficult to have actual books from their perspective).
Except the squats maybe RIP squats.

Thanks guys, for all the good info - I will check those out books as a starting point.
The games are all over the place, for sure. I've restrained from biting on any steam sales, no matter how highly regarded. I'd rather have a gentle introduction to the world, then I'll figure out what factions and such I'll like.
The GW website is like a black hole that pulls you in all directions with their tabletop games, miniatures, etc. I know I'm just going in for a good story, and maybe a statue here or there.
That HMO diorama is quite spectacular! That level of sculpt / paint detail should be the standard for anything 1/6 scale.

The Dark Imperium and Plague War books feature roboute after his return by the way (which is a big deal for 40k), read them after watchers in the the throne though if you are interested. The Space Marine game should be cheap as it's quite old. The Battle Fleet Gothic Games are pretty good too if you like RTS, and the first one (haven't played the second) actually follows the lore quite well other then fact that you as a player obviously rack up a lot more kills then a normal admiral should.

If you want to seriously start a journey into the WH40K lore, in my opinion, the best place to start is the Horus Heresy novels. The centre of the WH40K stage is the Imperium of Man, and the HH really delivers that story. From there you can explore the other well known novel lines....
While there's many folks who play the table top game, even competitively, there are many who just focus on miniature collecting, modelling and painting. Some build armies just for the creative Buzz, with no intention of ever rolling a dice

The Horus Heresy is alright but it's A LONG series and it's actually set in 30k, not sure if I'd recommend it. Hell until recently the HH line didn't even exist :P
I used to collect and pain minis myself with no intention of playing, was too expensive at the time :| Still too expensive for me now when I can get a statue :P
Also I should mention in regards to the HMO Diorama while it is 1/6th it is larger then normal 1/6th. Space Marines are genetically engineered humans and are a fair bit taller with Gully there being about 10ft tall (+ Armor). HMO previously mentioned that a Primarch (what the blue guy there is) statue would be roughly the size of a normal 1/4th statue in 1/6th.

Horus Heresy gives context to the game, and an understanding of the how, and why Space Marines exist. Sure it's set in 30K, but given the Chaos faction, and how time is supposed to work in the Warp (Eye of Terror), reading the HH gives insight into the "Long War" the Chaos Astartes strive to conclude.
Yes it's a long series, but what's the rush?
I mean, if someone wants an absolute crash course into WH40K, just buy the 8th Edition rules book and be done with it.

You can get the just of the HH with an easy synopsis ;p That's what existed for decades before the HH series anyways. They also do have a lot of nods and pokes at stuff that you wouldn't understand if you didn't already know, and 40k isn't just space marines. I think Eisonhorn is a better start :<

Anybody got the blood raven space marine?
I have it on Order.
Saw one video of it on YouTube looks pretty good.
Was gonna skip it but the fact Warhammer statues are so rare might as well get what’s out if it looks good enough which this one does in my opinion.

This P1 is a hard one. Enormous fan of the first pc games and the pose of this Space marine is perfect (with bolter and chainaxe).
But I can't get past; Why did they melt al the edges and the skulls on his suit. It looks like a large plastic figure this way.
In my mind, i see those green toy soldiers melted by a lighter..
If it was 'normal' and crisp, with realistic battle damage added. Day one preorder, no doubt.
P1 having hard time selling this with low ES, says enough. (imo has nothing to do with Dawn of War theme).
