Replaced mine A few years ago. At that time there was. Tax deduction for replacing with an energy efficient water heater. You should check to see if that is still going on.

it was leaking from the seal at the very bottom of the tank. No way to repair.
If it was just me, I would have tried replacing it myself but with a wife and three daughters and no vacation I can use, had to bite the bullet and get someone to replace. Called around and got some estimates. $1400 down the drain, literally I guess.

I never had to replace mine... I would think those heaters would be beasts to move.

When we bought our house we got one of those home warranty plans. We pay $400-500 a year and if something breaks, we call the warranty people and they send out somebody to repair/replace what ever broke. I think our "copay" is $75-100. Two years ago the refrigerator we got from my grandma when she moved into the nursing home shot craps and we ended up getting a check from the home warranty people for almost $2K to replace it. The fridge was over 10 yrs old and we ended up doubling the size/features for basically our premium and the "copay." Not a bad deal IMO.
Sorry about your hot water heater, that sucks.

Well with the house i bought this year my hot water heater went on me. Its from 2005 and turns out it was a defective model with the pilot light on it, it kept going out on me as i researched it. So i guess who ever owned the house before me broke the window glass and used a long lighter to light it since the flicker wouldnt light it.
So lately its been going out every night, and i did a lot of research and looked into my price range and got a kenmore from sears. Wanted one of the better ones but didnt have the cash and this kenmore one had very good reviews everywhere i looked into them.
Lucky i had a friend of the family who helped me install with no charge, so i lucked out. Now have blazing hot water again.
