armature question

I've been doing some reading before I make the big jump to start and sculpt. But I have a quick question.

I see people use armature supports that screw into the figure your making. What is the process of taking it out? Just unscrew it and fill the hole and bake?

I don't believe you unscrew them, pretty sure they are just cut off and then fixed accordingly...
