I believe there are around 25-30 AP's made for each statue run. Around 15 of these AP's go the first 15 collectors to place an order. The others are kept as back up pieces or for spares. I know this becuase I have had issues with a piece before (shipped to the wrong address and lost) and they sent an AP as a replacement as thats all they had remaining.
Later down the line the AP's which remain are sold on the warehouse gems program to free up warehouse space. I dont think theres any 'slapping' goes on these are shipped as AP's from the factory along with the numbered run. It states AP on the Base, COA, box and brown shipper. Often you actually see the AP run on the brown shipper for example AP 5 of 25.
The best point about the AP is the fact that Jerry autographs the base. Of course to do this they must all be opened which is where the quick inspection part comes in. Especially for the pieces Jerry sculpts himself such as the 1/3 Akuma to a PCS collector the autographed AP is a nice touch. Otherwise its exactly the same statue as the numbered run.
In general its always the same collectors who get them anyway as they understand the system.
