I just don't buy it. no up and coming directed wants to make their own little indy films instead of being involved in arguably the largest franchise in the entire world just because some people on the internet were mad that he made Johnny Storm black.
obviously I have no knowledge of the situation but i'd say him being fired for whatever reason is a far more believable response.
