The problem with your dowel idea is that the wood will have an uneven surface, no matter what you do. You'd have to seal it with some kind of urethane in order to keep the surface uniform.

not a problem. just coat the end in superglue and then sand it smooth.

I have used this may times with paintbrush ends. He can use anything round to press in the soft styrene. it doesn't have to be a dowel.

The method is what is important not the implements.
