Well, home video sales are way down all around, but Blu-Ray is doing better than DVD was at this point in its existence. Prices just tend to drop faster for Blu than DVD because sales of physical media are on an overall decline. But I think Blu is actually doing pretty well, DVD on the other hand is slowly going the way of VHS. In the end, movies will just go all digital like everything else, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

It has? Wasnt this the point at which the Matrix came out on DVD? I seem to remember that being the turning point for DVD sales as everyone I knew starting jumping on board in droves with the format after that one. I somehow dont get the impression that it's the same way with Blu-ray. I could be wrong though.

From everything I'm reading that's what sales reports are indicating. The thing is that, I don't think there's been one huge selling Blu-Ray like Matrix, it's overall sales and adoption rates. There are many more BR players in homes at a faster rate than there were DVD players. It's different times though, so it's tough to get an even comparison. It's kind of like when you compare the highest grossing movies, but you have to adjust for inflation to get the true winner. But if you look at the sales charts over at Amazon, BR has been outselling DVD for some time now.

Totally agree. I'm loving the trend of reasonably priced catalog titles. Now lets just pray Lionsgate doesn't blow it on the transfer as this is one of my most anticipated releases this year.

DEG: Blu-ray spending up more than 10%
Posted August 5, 2011 07:17 PM by Webmaster
Earlier today, the Digital Entertainment Group, a Los Angeles-based, industry funded nonprofit corporation that advocates and promotes the many consumer benefits associated with various entertainment products, including both physical and digital media on a variety of platforms, announced that Blu-ray spending is up more than 10% in the first half of 2011.
According to the report issued by the DEG, in the second quarter Blu-ray improved 16% over 2010 (inclusive of BD set-tops, PS3s and HTiBs), bringing total Blu-ray household penetration in the U.S. to more than 31.6 million. This performance, the DEG concludes, makes Blu-ray one of the fastest growing new technologies in the home entertainment industry.
Despite the more than 10% increase in Blu-ray spending, however, overall consumer spending on home entertainment is down 5%.
However, the DEG clarifies that last year's sales are highly skewed because of the unprecedented success of James Cameron's Avatar, which is now Hollywood's all-time box-office hit.
