A bit late but the original anime for sure for Susumu Hirasawa alone! Just know that the first episode is nothing like the rest of the series (till the very end).
When I saw the first ep I thought this was some mindless barbarian boring crap and then it switched to the Golden Age and I was hooked (in no small part because of the music).
The manga is great of course and it's the source material so it's a must.
The movie remakes of the series are good with some caveats. The CGI can be a bit hit or miss especially with people's faces and it basically goes like this:
1st movie is the worst because it is the one with most quiet character development scenes and the flaws fo the CGI and lack of Susumu Hirasawa shows a lot more in this one.
The second movie is alright because it's a lot more military wars and the CGI fares better there and the new music fits better.
The 3rd movie I'd argue is even better than the series because (iirc) it's more complete than the series except once again for the lack of Hirasawa.
The second recent series has an animation style that's not to everyone's liking but I don't mind it too much and it's finally(!!) new material that hasn't been before so no matter what it's a must.
And they got ONE track from Hirasawa for it that so instantly makes the scenes better they replay it all the time in following episodes, if that tells you anything.
