I used to work in retail food although it was a delicatessen, not a grocery store...I'm still in food but not retail...there are two things I miss (and have missed since 1987 when I became a full-time caterer)...
1) The variety of foods I had access to on a daily basis...if I wanted a mortadella or coppa or liverwurst or pastrami or corned beef or sopresatta sandwich, it was readily available. If I wanted potato salad, or macaroni or shrimp or cole slaw or tuna or crab or egg, it was there. Now in my business, I only have what I've sold on hand...I don't keep a supply of foods on hand for walk-in traffic, so my choices are limited to what's leftover.
2) The daily contact with John Q Public...I enjoy people and I enjoyed being a clerk and waiting on people...I took on the crankiest old ladies that no one else wanted to wait on and I'd have them smiling by the time they left..."Schmaltz herring? Did you want a male or female, ma'am?" or "The passtrami's too fatty? Let me start a fresh one just for you." or "I'd be happy to slice that lox for you, how thin would you like it?" Plus it was fun developing over-the-counter relationships with girls that came in for lunch daily...
Now, I see 200 people all at once for 5 hours and then nothing...it's different...not bad, just different
