Question What's with the fighting in Ice Hockey?

I've never understood why is it allowed. Why?

I agree. I love hockey and don't understand why the refs don't jumpt in and stop a fight when the two combatants are squaring off.

It appears that you can legally have a punchup in the middle of a game. If you did it out on the street you would be up for assalt.

it's all part of the strategy. High sticking, fighting, holding, etc. are ways for coaches to get talented or players that are on a roll offensively out of the game for 2, 5, or more minutes. Players are oftentimes sent in JUST to start a fight, commit a foul, or draw a foul. the NHL has really cut back on allowing full out fights....but it is so ingrained into the game it will never go away.

WHich is why I like to watch Olympic hockey. It's more about the skill of skating and stick handling.

fighting in hockey is traditional. teams often use an enforcer to mix it up in order to motivate their team that may be down in the score. you'll normally see an enforcer square off against another enforcer. these are marginal players but are high on the toughness scale.

hockey players are the most talented of all professional athletes. they perform an unnatural act, skating, in order to play the sport. this means not only do they need to be exceptional hockey players, but great skaters as well. what other sport matches the end to end excitement of hockey?
