COLOR ME

WILLY VERGINER

Willy Verginer grew up in the Val Gardena region of Italy, surrounded by the forests and summits of the Dolomites that will have a great influence on his work. As a teenager, he was introduced to painting and studied at the Arts Secondary School in Ortisei. However, his attraction for woodworking and sculpture led him to train in this discipline. He perfected his learning by attending the many workshops of the Val Gardena valley, known for its sculptural tradition since the eighteenth century. Although he has assimilated the artisanal and ancestral traditions of polychrome sculpture and integrated the traditional vocabulary of the craft, his ambitions are broader, universal and contemporary.
The technique adopted by Willy Verginer is indicative of his approach both figurative and conceptual. His sculptures are composed of a mass of several blocks of wood, naturally dried for 6 years to prevent the wood from transforming. From these coarse masses, he created the forms of his sculpture with the help of a saw and an axe. Then, he refines his work with wood scissors and uses very small tools to work the eyelids or earlobes of his figures.
In 2008, Verginer introduced large monochromatic ranges that are a hallmark of his artistic practice.

PETER DEMETZ

Born in Bolanzo, Italy, Peter Demetz has reached international acclaim for his intricate wood carvings. After studying at the Ortisei Art Institute, Demetz acquired an apprenticeship under master sculptor Heinrich Demetz, whose focus in creating "sacred art" had a profound impact on Peter and his work. Demetz went on to study educational and developmental psychology so as to begin teaching lectures and seminars. Since 2001, Demetz has taught wood-carving, drawing, design, anatomy, and other courses for the Academy of Fine Arts in Carrara, Daetz-Centrum in Lichtenstein, Germany, the design center of Swarovski in Austria, and the LKJ-Sachsen in Leipzig.

Demetz's work features extraordinarily detailed wooden figures positioned in a light-box as if on a theatrical stage. The figures' outer appearance are often downplayed or hidden so as to draw attention to their inner world. There is always a presence of individual self-reflection in each of Demetz's works, which have captured international attention through exhibitions in Italy, Austria, Germany, the United States, Belgium and Turkey as well as fairs such as Art Miami.

It's a good choice, sir
This is the first work I saw from this sculptor. As you can imagine, I wanted to know more...
He can sculpt life-size, but most of his creations above, are about 50 cm ( 20 in ) high. He stages them using trompe-l'oeil perspectives, frames, mirrors, natural or painted wood plans, lights.
It could even give some ideas to collectors here.

REVEIL

The veils often dressed statues to avoid the wrath of censorship. In part of his work, he manages to print all the feminine grace in a monolithic veil.

MICHAEL JAMES TALBOT
is a British Sculptor. Born in Staffordshire in Northern England in 1959, Michael completed his BA Honours Degree in Sculpture before receiving a scholarship in 1980 for Postgraduate study at The Royal Academy of Arts in London. Michael continued his studies at The Sir Henry Doulton Sculpture School under Colin Melbourne ARCA and the courageous Dame Elizabeth Frink RA.

Inspired by Greek mythology, Venetian masquerades and the poesie of the human form, Michael uses wax, clay and bronze to translate timeless human narratives into figurative artwork. Through a delicate synchrony of form, tension and balance, Michael transforms his vision of live models into patinated and polished sculptures. The artist contrasts the impermanence of time and being as expressed by his dynamic deities and fascinating figures with the permanence and rigidity of bronze cast; seeking connections rather than differences with our ancestors from long ago.

I think this would sell well in 1/4 or 1/3 scale.

Could you imagine the three sirens, instead of the three graces...

Or with a dynamic pose...
Not really like that though...

With that paint application...

THE COLOR OF THE SOUL

WOODROW NASH

His stylized African portraits - and their cut out eyes - evoke the 15th century Benin concepts of graceful slender proportions and undulating lines of 18th century Art Nouveau. In his works Nash achieves his goal of integrating expression, complex symbolism and sophisticated aesthetics to yield striking embodiments of the human soul and sensuality.
Incorporating various styles and techniques Nash utilizes stoneware, earthenware, terracotta and porcelain. The sculptures are then fired electronically using a pit firing technique giving the sculptures a "raku" effect; creating an "African Nouveau" trademark that is solely his own. Each sculptural figure is unique and strikes an individual pose of poetic grace and refined detail ? each telling their own story.
