It appears most modern artwork in general these days, unless it is something obviously spectacular, seems to go for less upon resale. Speaking for myself, unless I was selling a cover or vintage page, I typically had a hard time moving it, especially lately. It's to the point where I'm just about completely out of the commissions market. Commission pieces seem to be an almost certainty to lose money from day 1, no matter how nice they are. However, there are some instances where the investment remains somewhat sound on modern artwork. I bought an X-Men cover for 8k in 2017 and recently sold it for 10k, though this seems to be more the exception to the rule.

I realize some people will say "just buy what you like -- who cares about value". Well, while people are certainly free to that opinion, I do not subscribe to it. This isn't a sofa or kitchen appliance. I'm not really inclined to spend that kind of money if I do not think the return will be there.

New artwork is a non starter as far a value goes... In early 2000's new art cost more then art in the 70's and 80's. Case in point, I bought Birds of Prey McGuinness cover for $1000 in 2002. I sold it for $480 with BP a month ago. At that same time a Spider-Woman cover was about $1000 and now sells for $15k. Spider-Woman pages at that time were $40 or $50. Now they are $1500-$2000.

McGuinness art is a consistent loser.

I wonder why that is? Maybe it's because Hulk art collectors have poor taste in general?

not in my experience

I have had multiple offers for potential nice profits on some McG pieces in my collection. Additionally, I have tried to give some collectors profit on McG pieces in their collections and have been denied.
