Aves apoxie (SCULPT or CLAY) What's the difference?

I'm turning to the experts for some guidance. What is the difference between Aves apoxie sculpt and Aves apoxie clay? Obviously, I have never used either product and I'm curious what will give me the best results. I'm working on a new project and have to repair a broken cape. Normally I use BONDO to fill and repair statues. In 20 minutes it's hard and ready to sand and paint. I was thinking that an Aves product would allow me to work and shape the delicate area without a tight time restraint.

Also, where's the best place to buy it? My local craft stores don't carry it.

There is a pretty big difference between the AVES Apoxie Clay and Apoxie Sculpt. What I find is that the Clay is much more like...well, ceramic clay. It's a bit grainy and does not hold it's shape quite as nicely as the Apoxie Sculpt. It's great stuff, but I think it is more geared towards people that want to create pottery in a non-fire method.

Now, my personal favorite medium is AVES Fix-It sculpt, this is a little smoother and firmer than the Apoxie Sculpt, it seems to hold it's shape better for tighter/crisper detailing.

I would also recommend getting the AVES Safety Solvent for smoothing your AVES product (GREAT STUFF!!!!)

What I recommend is that you contact AVES and buy small sample packs of each to test and try, in the end...it will come down to personal preference.

I normally buy direct from AVES myself:

Fix-it is the way to go for detail work ad building out stuff like a ear, nose, horns etc... Stuff keeps its form and doesnt sag.

Regular aves is what i use for building a chest muscle or legs muscles etc....

Just need to buy both and try them out., You will figure out fast if its better for you or not.

Hey Rick,

Honestly, it all comes down to personal preference.
The Fix-It sculpt is more expensive, but I like the way it tools and feathers and holds it's shape. Other than filling air bubbles/pin holes (here I use AVES Apoxie Sculpt), I mainly use the Fix-It sculpt these days for putty work on joining parts, resculpting, sculpting, etc....

Tommy,
I'm always amazed at the detail you get in your sculpts working in Aves. I love it's strength as a base, but I've always found it too "bubblegummy" to get much detail in my work. I tend to work over an Aves base with SS, putting in all details with the SS. Is there a trick to working it that I haven't discovered?
Thanks,
DV
