I've used the same Classic since 2006, but I've bought about 4 sets of earbuds for it.

The standard Apple earbuds aren't worth crap - they don't fit me properly, the sound is horrible, and the rubber on the join between the plug and the cord always frays within a year or so. I now have a $10 Sony set that fits, is more durable, and has great sound quality, so I can finally hear the finer details I've been missing for the past 5 years.

My in-laws bought the latest version for my 9 year old. That dang thing is so small, I know she is going to lose it. Course that is a great plan by Apple for return business.

I had a fist gen one for years, couldn't kill that thing. I was planning on not getting a new one until it croaked, but updated to a touch as I think that thing was going to outlive me. The touch is great, couldn't be happier with it.
