Toys R Us selling or closing all stores

http://money.cnn.com/2018/03/14/news...res/index.html

Quote:
Toys "R" Us is closing its doors after 70 years in business.
The iconic toy retailer will shut or sell all of its almost 800 stores in the United States, a source familiar with the matter told CNNMoney on Wednesday. About 33,000 jobs in the United States are at risk.

My buddies and I have been discussing this all day and last week.

Really a sad time.

All of us here really are a bunch of kids buying toys just like when we were kids, albeit the price tags are slightly different.

Sucks.
Still go for NECA figures and diecast cars.
Used to go with my father in the seventies for model kits.
I remember just after Star Wars came out they had an appearance of Vader and stormtroopers at my local store.
Losing another touchstone from my life.

NECA is losing a valuable place to show off their stuff.

Sad to hear. I am hopeful the ones in Canada remain open. I was just there at noon with my kids and it had a good flow of customers at the cash. Every day they have specials and during the March break they were giving away $5 gift cards until 1 pm to children participating in the coloring and bean bag throwing. I tried to get a gift card but they didn't believe a 13 year old could have a goatee

The world just won't be the same without a toy store to go to. Child World, KayBee, and now Toys R Us. Just a damn shame, and I can't help but feel I've been a part of it, since I've used Amazon as much as the next guy.

RIP Toys R Us. Maybe there will be more “retro” comic and hobby stores to fill the void.

Anecdotally much of this seems to be a general shift away from brick and mortar in my area.

Toys R Us was magical to me as a kid because it felt like a store with all the stuff I wanted. My local grocery or department store had a few toys tucked away so seeing whole aisles of toys was mesmerizing.

Options today are
1. Drive twenty minutes to the store and hope they have what you want.
2. Go online, find item you want, often get it cheaper, wait a week to get it.

I blame the private equity investors who bought it and then transferred debt from their other holdings to Toys R Us. They get a nice big tax writeoff while the employees lose their jobs.
