I think it's important that in any business transaction both parties have a clear idea of the expected time frame, and there be an open line of communication should any delays happen.
I'm admittedly very new to this, but some of the delays and gaps in communication some of you have gone through seem unacceptable. I'd never go to that artist again, would never recommend him/her, and would ask for a refund. Ignoring emails, especially when significant amounts of money may have been sent as a deposit, is borderline fraud.
Luckily, thus far, everything is going fine for me. Robbi Rodriguez, via Landroid here on the forums, has always responded to my emails immediately, and has been very clear as to what time frame I can expect. Mike Bowden, contacted via personal email, has always been quick to respond, sent me preliminary layouts, and wouldn't even accept a deposit until he was sure he'd have time to start work. So far so good, on both accounts.
