I've experienced both ends of the spectrum. Some artists are quick and easy to communicate with while others are not. Honestly, simple as that. Patience is truly a "must have" trait in the commission game, unless you're a client of Brett Weldele. That dude is tops in the barely wait commission list. Seriously, i paid and 5 days later it was in my hands. Dude's a beast. Only if they were all like that.

I think it's important that in any business transaction both parties have a clear idea of the expected time frame, and there be an open line of communication should any delays happen.

I'm admittedly very new to this, but some of the delays and gaps in communication some of you have gone through seem unacceptable. I'd never go to that artist again, would never recommend him/her, and would ask for a refund. Ignoring emails, especially when significant amounts of money may have been sent as a deposit, is borderline fraud.

Luckily, thus far, everything is going fine for me. Robbi Rodriguez, via Landroid here on the forums, has always responded to my emails immediately, and has been very clear as to what time frame I can expect. Mike Bowden, contacted via personal email, has always been quick to respond, sent me preliminary layouts, and wouldn't even accept a deposit until he was sure he'd have time to start work. So far so good, on both accounts.

I've found a mixed bag with non-con commissions. Great experiences with some awesome art as an outcome with the occassional bad experience sprinkled in.

Unfortunately the bad experiences stick out and those have made me leery of over-extending myself with non-con pieces, unknown artists, and paying full upfront.

Have found myself most comfortable getting pieces at cons and sticking with artists I know, like, and know what to expect from them.
