We don't need for heroes to die to care about their mythos, that is what they get wrong. We need to see how they move forward when someone they care about dies or on the other hand how they falter when it happens.
That is why we care so much for Peter Parker, it was how Ben or Gwen's death affected him for the rest of his comic life. We don't need Peter Parker to die to care about him. We follow these heroes for the inspiration they provide in relation to our lives.
I cared...truly, when Cyke lost Jean the first time. Her death was moving. That being said her rebirth was the only one that makes sense (Phoenix rising, etc...) but I digress, it mattered because I needed to relate to Scott in relation to losing someone in my life.
I could be wrong but this is my opinion of why deaths of heroes is not needed.

I remember reading an X-Men comic right after The Extinction Agenda storyline where Professor X has use of his legs but knows that it won't last and he has this whole discussion with Jubilee. I remember that she ends up talking him into rollerblading and it's whilst he's on the blades that his legs give out and he's back to needing a wheelchair.
There was no action, just interaction between two characters in the aftermath of a major event, and that issue has stuck in my head more than any "death".

Whatever your feelings on the concept, it's actually a very good read.

I dropped all Wolverine-related books a few years ago, the one exception being Origin II. I can handle him in the Avengers titles since his role isn't as prominent there, but I'm through with all the X-books where he's a regular. I'm just too burnt out on the character to enjoy him anymore.

So, despite my earlier post, I ended up buying all 4 issues as they rolled out (the last one being today), stock-piled them, & ended up reading all 4 in one straight shot. Gotta say, I really liked it! I don't know where it'll lead or could really give a damn about all the tie-ins & upcoming "afterward" arcs, but, that being said, the core Death of Wolverine story was a nice tight, almost old-school tale with great art & some great guest stars. Should I have saved a buck & just waited for the trade? Yeah, probably, but that's always been tough for me. This was a great Wolverine story, bottom line. He even had a nice, cool, full-circle end. Great read!
