I don't think the success of Covenant has any bearing on whether Neill Blomkamp's sequel to Aliens is greenlit. Covenant was simply the priority. Likely due to Ridley Scott's interest and involvement. While 20th Century Fox hasn't officially said Alien 5 is a go all signs point to production starting some point after Weaver finishes the Avatar sequels and Blomkamp finishes The Gone World.

Not necessarily true.

There IS an attempt to bridge both films closer in mythology and of course in branding...i.e. "ALIEN" in the title.

If the film under performs at the box office, it could potentially push the franchise back into development hell for YEARS and YEARS.

I'm sure there are expectations from FOX for this to earn MORE than its previous release.

2012 - Prometheus - $126 million
2007 - Aliens Vs. Predator - Requiem - $41 million
2004 - Alien Vs. Predator - $80 million
1997 - Alien Resurrection - $47 million
1992 - Alien 3 - $55 million
1986 - Aliens - $85 million
1979 - Alien - $78 million

Well every studio wants their film to perform well. My point is regardless of how Covenant performs 20th Century Fox isn't going to abandon the ALIEN franchise and that's exactly what it would take for them to kill Blomkamp's film. He's a dream director and they have to know they're lucky to have him so interested. Add to that the script is completed plus both Weaver and Biehn have confirmed they're 100% on board. I'd say the only thing that threatens the project at this point is the danger of any one of those 3 not being able to commit due to it being pushed out possibly conflicting with their other projects.

just made some adjustments

There are very few moments that you find yourself fully realizing you are viewing perhaps one of the worst films of all time, I had such a moment, I'll never forget it.

I went to a general store. They wouldn't let me buy anything specifically.

With Weaver and Biehn, they aren't getting any younger. A true sequel for aliens has been wanted for 24 years. I hope covenant is good and explains some origins, but 5 surpasses all. (Expectations, Hope, Excitement, Hype)

True, Fox will always mine their ALIEN franchise for future films, but whether they would follow through on ALIENS-2 in regards to the trajectory of Prometheus remains to be seen.

Blomkamp's next film's success could also have some bearing as Chappie under performed at the box office as did Elysium with both unable to make their budgets back. Dream director aside, he's not exactly on a winning streak.

Age would certainly be a factor. Sigourney would be 70 years old in three years.

Sigourney would be, but her clones never age.

Ha! Well, they could certainly go the CG route to make her look younger.

I hate to burst your confidence Hellboy, but check out this latest tweet from Blomkamp.

Yeah, read the same thing earlier. I guess they're more focused on the Prometheus era films. Ridley Scott might be good for one more ALIEN film at best so it's pretty short sighted of them not to move forward with it and Blomkamp's film. 20th Century Fox isn't exactly known for making the smartest decisions though. That said, until they say it's officially dead there is hope.
