I really don't think it's as nefarious as some people make it out to be. And really it probably has very little to do with the approving side. If XM/P1/SS are good at what they do then getting a statue approved should be the least of their worries. If anything more than 5% of their statues get rejected per year, I'd say they're doing a bad design job. They should know what will get approved and what won't before they even get to the approval stage.
XM obviously isn't going to want to make something that looks really close to the Sideshow version because not only do they want to entice the people who want 1 Emma Frost (or whoever,) they also want to entice the people who would be willing to have multiple. So there's clearly an incentive there to make something different than what's already available, and that seems to be an XM staple to begin with. Their statues always seem to have something a bit unique about them.
