Any statue company could use it and would be correct. Sideshow has kind of claimed it for themselves, then their marketing department got their hands on it and their usage of it has changed some over the years. Sideshow also use other terms like 'comiquette' (portmanteau of 'comic' and 'maquette') and 'premium format' to make other distinctions between statues, including but not limited to: price, scale and use of mixed-media.

Maybe technically, but a lot of us associate the term to pieces made by production studios for film or television. Or even pieces based on artwork from the films art department.

I always understood that a Maquette does not have to be 1/4 scale like a PF. So the scale is "flexible" and the prices are higher for some reason.
Everything else is like a PF.
