Angelina Jolie undergoes double mastectomy

Doing what she can to ensure she's with her kids as long as possible.

A personal choice, but it seems quite extreme unless there is some kind of family medical history or indication of a problem.

Reminds me of the good old days when people would have all their teeth removed at a certain age in order to avoid expensive dental work later in life.

From what I heard, based on family medical history, she had an 8X% chance of developing the cancer.

As posted previously she carries the gene for breast AND ovarian cancer.

And her mother died from breast cancer. So the history is there.

If I had her probability, I would do it too.

What I'm curious about is how the reconstruction worked so soon. I was under the impression you had to heal for a while, then reconstruct.

I wish her well and hope she feels at peace with her decision. She is such a lovely lady and I admire her greatly.

Have you ever imagined a world with no hypothetical situations?

I believe that's true for women who have had chemo or radiation along with the mastectomy.

I find it interesting that here on the forum, where it's mostly a male population, there seems to be a lot of encouragement and admiration about this. However, elsewhere some people seem to be taking issue with this and turning it into something else.

I came across this article on FB:

http://www.michaelmoore.com/words/mi...e-as-angelinas

For those that don't feel like reading it, the bottom line is that the writer can't afford to have the same procedures that AJ had, and seems to be downplaying the point of AJ sharing her experience by highlighting the fact that many women cannot afford to have these procedures. My thoughts about this are that I feel it's better to enlighten women about the options available to them. There are many medical procedures that not everyone can afford, but is it better to keep them quiet because not everyone can afford them? Most of the people who are echoing the writer's sentiments happen to be women, so I just feel like this has more to do with AJ than anything else. Just curious what everyone else thinks.
