Digital camera recommendations

Time for a new digital camera. Through the years I have been pretty much an exclusive Sony user but I think I am going to look elsewhere for this one. While I like to play around and have control over the camera I am not looking for a DSLR right now. I want the best and most versatile high-end compact that is out there. Something that I can pick up and carry around with me on my upcoming trip and maybe even throw in my pocket. At this point it I am heavily leaning toward the Canon Powershot G7. Feel free to chime in and give your opinion. With summer just about here I imagine a number of folks might be looking for new cameras and this thread might be of some use.

Thanks but I've been a member over at dpreview for years now. Phil Askey runs a great site. I've gone throught the reviews and forums over there extensively. I was actually looking for opinions here.

I have always been using Sony point-n-shoot cameras that has Carl Zeis lense built in. I'm currently using CyberShot T9, and 5 megapixel is good enough. Most importantly is the battery life

Well, like I mentioned in my first post, my last 5 or 6 digicams have all been Sony's from the smaller ones up to the Cyber-shot DSC-707 and DSC-717. Great cameras and I still have and use the 717. But I am gonna take a break from Sony for a while. I pulled the trigger and ordered the Canon Powershot G7 from Amazon. Got a pretty good deal too. $460 with a $50 online rebate, free 2 day shipping and no tax. Now to pick up a few of those new 8GB SDHC memory cards and a spare battery.
