you need to destroy the actual discs inside if you are worried about personal info.

Other way is to take a powerful magnet to it while its plugged in and i suggest you don't do that.

There is places, that have HD shredders, but you would have to check into where they are at. They throw the HD in it and it gets shredded like a paper shredder.

Id burn it. Just put the HD in a metal container/bucket/etc... , a little gasoline, and light that b!tch up. Ive done it before, and it works great. Theres no way any one could retreive info off of it after that.

Also, if you do tear it open, dont mess around with the magnets inside of it. They can really mess you up, so be careful with your fingers. Read this before you decide to open it up.

Honestly all i ever done before i got rid of a HD is just Zero it out.

On Mac OSX, you can erase a HD, and zero out all the data. There is a one time pass, 7 time pass and a 24 time pass. I have just done a 7 time pass, takes about 3 hours or so and sold all my HDs off.

This is what HD companies do when they get a HD returned and refurbish it, they just zero out all the data.
