If you are a PC guy and going to be getting windows 7, best to get windows 7 in the 64 bit which you will need at least 8 gigs of ram. This too will last you awhile with programs being made for 64 bit now.
other then that, laptop or desktop is up to you. But more people get laptop these days then desktops, unless you are into gaming and need storage a desktop is the way to go since they can be upgraded.
As for PC latops i dont know much about them, but if you want a desktop that you can build your own way i suggest trying out www.cyberpowerpc.com
With them you can pick and choose parts, cases etc.. that fit your needs rather then getting a cheap dell etc...

8 gb is not the minimum... 2GB is.

ya but most of the programs, games etc... want around 4 gigs so maxing out and getting close to 8gigs will help more then just 2. These days min ram is bad, always better to max it out or at least triple it.

So this is what I'm leaning towards.
What do you guys think? My only concern is what Vincevell mentioned regarding getting an i7 but is that REALLY necessary?
I'll get a laptop soon enough but for now I need a PC that will last me a while through timely upgrades over the years. I've maintained my older computers for about 5+ years apiece.

Looks remarkably like one I have at home.
I only have 1 complaint with it.
I typicallly use a SD card for the "Speedburst" option (where files typically used by the OS are on the hard drive but are copied to the SD card for performance improvement.) The SD card slots are under a door and the door has to remain open when the SD card is inserted.
It's a minor beef but otherwise I've been very happy with my Inspiron.
