I would say that depends on if you like older or newer Batman stories I guess. The Batman B&W is great IMO. There are two Brave and the Bold omnibus books that focus on Batman teaming up with other characters, those are pretty great too, they focus on Bronze Age stories.

I do agree with Mister H about the Tales of the Batman and Legend of the Dark Knight hardcovers. I would recommend the Marshall Rogers hardcover. Those have the stories he drew with Steve Englehart writing. Those stories are fantastic and still hold up today. Also the Alan Brennert Stories are very good. Those are mainly just team up stories from the Brave and the Bold but were so good.

The Loeb/Sale Omni is great, most of the Neal Adams Batman Omni is really good and then there is the Batman Black and White Omni (Great!) and the Grant Morrison omnis (alright). Although not omnibus books, the Tales of the Batman and Legends of the Dark Knight hardcovers are really good for the most part, which are collections from different Batman writers.

I have the Batman B&W Omnibus and it’s terrific, also quite a number of those Tales of the Batman and Legends of the Dark Knight HCs. I can recommend all of them. Also the 3 volume Neal Adams HCs, but would avoid the Omnibus as it has that awful Odyssey series in it.

Someone gave me this HC for free. I was astounded at how awful this was too. How does something like this get passed editorial? Moreover, how do artists/writers who at one time seemed so in touch with characterization suddenly present something barely resembling a character's profile?

It was Neal Adams, that is how it passed through. I read the first five issues of that and I dropped it. I believe Neal actually wrote it as well, did he not? I wonder if someone else would have helped him plot or write it that it would have been better.

Thanks everyone. A few of these are still available. I have a good list to start working on. I'm starting with a couple of the more affordable ones and then add the Snyder, Dini, Loeb, Morrison, B&W little by little.

Just got the Dini Omni in myself, can’t wait to crack that one open, also got the Matt Wagner: Tales of the Dark Knight. Good luck with your new collection.

I’ve got all of Dini’s work in separate HCs. Didn’t knot there’s a Wagner collection but will have to see if it’s redundant with other HCs and trades I’ve got.

Pretty much. His stuff over the last 3+ decades, even when he’s just drawing, is over rendered and unrecognizable. When he writes it’s abysmal.

wktf, have you seen the Fantastic Four-Antithesis mini series he is doing with Mark Waid? Mark Farmer is inking his work and it seems to have tamed down the over-rendering of his artwork.
