Employers using Facebook as a reference

I have just learned that some employers are utilizing facebook as a reference tool to see what sort of friends you have. So unless you have personally set your security features-so friends only may access your pages-your info is there for all to see. In this way employers seem to be discriminating against folks who have pals with piercings, tattoos, etc.

I say if someone is stupid enough to post all sorts of information about themselves on the internet, and an employer uses that to determine whether to hire you or not, then it's not the employers fault.
If you owned a company you'd want as much info about the person you were considering for hire. You can't blame them.
Is it fair that they assume just because your friends are naked, holding beers and bongs, that you'll be wild an somehow not perform you duties you were hired for?
Yes and No.
If you were the president of the United States it wouldn't matter if you had a picture of you in college holding a spliff. If you were an Olympic Athlete who won
8 gold medals, and someone dug up a pic of you smoking a bong it somehow does?
How's that for hypocrisy?

Before you criticize someone, you should walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.

Dont you have to add the person as a friend before you can view there profile? If you dont add them they cant see who your friends are.

Nope. You have to set up that security feature yourself. It's not automatic.

I went for a second interview at an IT company and the person came in and said that they had googled me before I came in and they saw my clips from the tv show I did about my Hulk obsession. She said that based on what she saw, that I would fit in. I definitely think it helped me get the job. Which I start tomorrow by the way and am way excited for.
