I keep hearing about witches, hunters, tanks, smokers etc...are there a bunch of critters in this game other than zombies or are those just variations of the zombie?

those are the "super" zombies. Hunters are extremly fast and can jump and charge, Smokers have frog like tounges and can wrap you up with them, Witches are tricky as they look like crying girls but if you startel them they get up and kick the crap out of you and Tanks are just giant monsters that do a ton of damage
