The hobby is full of fans that collect purely because of aesthetics. It looks good therefore I buy it. I know nothing about the character and may be I'll learn later...or I won't. The question then becomes how sustainable that approach is before one moves on to something else.

Yeah, you don't necessarily have to be a huge fan of a particular character in order to be drawn to a piece. Falling in love with a piece is a combination of nostalgia/fandom and aesthetics.
If you're a huge fan of a niche character that rarely gets statues, then you will probably be willing to settle with a statue that is not ideally executed. If you know nothing about a character statue but love the design/execution of the piece, you might consider picking it up and reading up on the character.
The point of collecting is to gradually acquire pieces that make you feel excited to own and display!
