I have never had any problem with Detolfs. Just make sure you not put the screws in crazy tight. My wife and our exchange student were putting one together for me and they put the screws in so tight the glass started to bend. I asked them why and they said they were trying to make it more secure. Fortunately I noticed before the glass broke.

Detolfs can hold far more than what they’re rated for. I’ve personally had statues that weighed upwards of 30lbs on a shelf before, so have many other members here. The only time I’ve seen one of these cabinets not hold up was when the metal supports were installed backwards by mistake. Never seen evidence of the glass or welds breaking.

For all the threads people have started over the years fearing detolf catastrophe, I have yet to see one fail when properly assembled.

How many people have the inclination to take and post pictures of broken shelves with thousands of dollars worth of damaged objects?
Edit: Just did a search and found that Detolf shelves aren't known to break, but the side walls and doors do. There's even a thread here at SF.com.

The side glass breaking is usually due to over tightening of the top and bottom screws which puts unnecessary pressure on the glass. The doors being full glass with no frame are susceptible to all sorts of damage. Bottom line is if you assemble these correctly and treat them with care the success rate is near perfect and the hold capacity is far greater than what they’re rated at.
