To put it in context, I once had a friend over who admired something I had laying on my dining room table. It was there because I had put it up on eBay and was waiting to ship it out when the auction was over, which I explained to him.

He asked if I would sell it to him, and I told him no, that it was already up for sale and had bids, but joked that if he wanted to put in a bid of his own I wouldn't charge him shipping if he won.

He put in his top bid on his eBay app and was immediately outbid. A few days later 3 other people bid it up again. But even though he ultimately had no effect on the final outcome, eBay terminated the auction before it ended and cancelled both our accounts, because he was using my WiFi and they detected the IP address from the seller and a bidder were the same.

That's how seriously it's taken at eBay, and for an item much, much cheaper than some of the pieces we're talking about here.

Romita should be embarrassed. He's a legend and his name is being used to rip off fans. And Heritage needs to be shamed into changing it's policies.

Moral of this story: eBay is serious about shills, Heritage - not so much

What kills me is all the people coming out of the woodwork and exclaiming how nice Mike is, how much art he has sold them, and on and on ... which is all fine and true but it doesn't erase the facts that he exposed about his own practices.

I did, but it took a lot of phone calls to their security department. My friend never bothered to get his back.

I'm sure these guys pull the same thing on eBay too to some extent, but at least eBay doesn't make it easy. Heritage is straight up complicit in defrauding their customers.

HA is about bottom line dollars, period. I just started buying from them last year and was ready to move a significant portion of my collection budget to their auctions but the last month or 2 has really opened my eyes and has me looking in other directions.

Did anything ever come out of this? This seemed fairly huge when this was first posted.

Nope, nothing public at least. It's a shame as there have been a couple items I wanted to bid on at HA that I completely stayed away from due to their lack of response. There have been items that I would have bid one before this and I just don't have any interest any more. I have dealt with Comic Link as they seem to take this more seriously
