Though the film met with lukewarm reviews and a relatively lukewarm domestic box office, Fox has officially starting the ball rolling on a second Fantastic Four movie, this according to The Hollywood Reporter. Through Marvel had announced the sequel on its upcoming films slate in its Q3 2005 report, this was the first official word from the studio in regards to the production.
Director Tim Story and screenwriter Mark Frost will be returning as the film’s director and screenwriter, respectively, and the studio is once again aiming for a July 4th release, this time, July 4th, 2007. The first FF film was due to open on July 4th this summer, but was moved after the date was announced, in order to avoid a head-to-head box office battle with War of the Worlds.
Fantastic Four brought in $154 million domestically, and saw more than that again worldwide, for a total, worldwide box office gross of approximately $174.8 million.
The “four” of the Fantastic Four, that is, Ioan Gruffudd, Jessica Alba, Chris Evans and Michael Chiklis are all expected to return as they signed agreements which would ensure their performances through a possible trilogy of films. Dr. Doom, or at least Julian McMahon’s Dr. Doom probably won’t be the villain for FF2 however, as the actor will be starring opposite Sandra Bullock in Premonition, which begins filming in January of 206.
FF2 is the second major superhero film to be announced for ’07, with Spider-Man 3 slated for a Memorial Day opening
