Staining A New Fence

We just got our backyard redone, which included the installation of a brand new, unstained fence.

Now while this doesn't bother my boyfriend, there is no way I am leaving the wood that light color. No way.

I have painted a ton of indoor areas, but have never stained an outdoor surface. Is there a better time of year (temp wise) to do this project? Do you have a favorite stain brand?

I know it needs to be dry, but I'm also hoping to do this before winter so that I don't have to clean the fence next spring.

And would you recommend roller, brush, or combo? Can't use a sprayer as it's a picket fence with space between the slats.

Just stained our fence this last weekend. Still warm here, so it dried quickly. You're good any time it's dry, season doesn't matter. Use a brush.

I like TWP stains, a little more expensive but worth it in my opinion. I slide some cardboard under the fence so I can stain all the way down the boards without getting my brush dirty. You didn't mention what type of wood you were staining, that can make a difference in the stain you want to purchase. Good luck!

It's a pine wood fence, and thank you for making me think about part of the fence because I might have forgotten that part!!

Thanks for the info guys -- now I need it to stop raining and dry up!

You can use brush to clean the staining of a fence as this is the simplest and easiest way.Read more

Make sure you seal it after you stain it.
