Paramount NZ refunds disappointed Jack Reacher fan

http://www.nbr.co.nz/article/paramou...-fan-ck-137927

Paramount Pictures has agreed to refund a disappointed viewer of the movie Jack Reacher - based in on a novel in the popular series by Lee Child.

"J Congdon" complained to the Advertising Standards Authority that a TV advertisement for the movie featured a clifftop explosion.

The complainant said the scene was why they "most wanted to see the movie, aside from having Tom Cruise in it."

Paramount Pictures NZ replied to the ASA that movie trailers were created before the final edit of a movie.

"Despite our best intentions, it is always possible that certain scenes appearing in an advertisement or trailer may not appear in the final version of a film."

Paramount was happy to refund the ticket price.

The studio noted the advertisement stopped airing around January 11, 2013 (Jack Reacher debuted in the US on December 21, 2012).

Although based on a blockbuster series of novels, Jack Reacher had a modest $US80 million US box office as of March 21, and worldwide receipts of a so-so $US212 million.

Although favoured by our ASA complainant, the casting of Tom Cruise in the title role was controversial.

A signature feature of the title character, in print, include that Mr Reacher is unusually tall.

But although fans of the best-selling books largely stayed away, a number of critics noted the irony that it was actually a pretty good move.

"[Director/screenwriter] Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise deliver on their promise, with a witty, violent take on Reacher that makes up for its lack of height with an abundance of smarts and thrills," wrote Empire's critic.
