Tony's pain and the impact of Civil War on him suddenly became very real for me. Great two part story.

Ok ,I'm gonna have to buy this now.
It seems marvel waited late in teh game to humanize iron man in this conflict, and had to do it outside of the main title.

The biggest problem (among several) concerning Civil War has been the uneveness in the various writers portrayals of Iron Man.
I keep thinking how much better this event would have been if both Cap and Iron Man had been written without the obvious bias on the part of the writers as to who was right and who was wrong in their beliefs.

I certainly agree with your first point. Sometimes he comes across as a cold hearted unmittigated prick. At others, a compassionate deeply remorseful man. From an editorial perspective, the editor in charge of overseeing this event should have (maybe he did?) sat all the writers down and taken them through a briefing on the characters and how they'd be portrayed or how their characterization should evolve.

I read the IM in the shop. I don't feel sorry for Tony. He's indirectly (or even directly) caused a lot of pain in others lives, and his manipulation of Peter Parker is espcially bad. He pretty much gave Peter that suit only to be able to have a way to beat him later. This is even worse than Batman creating Brother Eye (at least Batman had a good reason since he was mindwiped by his allies).
But, I agree with Tet and WKTF, the way he's been portrayed seems to be pretty much left up to the writer of said storyline.

Some other, though very similar, opinions found regarding New Avengers, Captain America/Iron Man and Fantastic Four here for those interested:
