DeToxing the kitchen oven after sculpey bakes...

Friends,

I thought I saw a few refrences on here in discussion about toxicity following an oven bake of super sculpey.

Please provide a compelling argument one way or the other.

Do I clean after a bake? Every bake? Clean how? With what?

What happens if I don't?

As far as I have read and asked around, anything once used for polymer clay cannot be used for food. You might have to ask a scientist (not kidding) cause you will need some scrubbing agent and a fume absorbent. That's the basis of detoxing. Another approach would be a neutralizing agent that makes the fumes harmless. Just my two cents.

Here's the link to Polyform's hazard warning about their products. It's mostly Hydrochloric acid fumes.

Your link above says polyclay is rated non toxic to humans and that fumes may be the only irritant. Ill read the pdf and then decide..

And your provided pdf lists zero carcinogenic compounds thus rendering it non toxic unless fumes are created by over heating to 350'....

So is "toxicity " from baking a fable?

Will my apple pie baked in the same oven hurt me?

I have not been convinced one way or another yet.

I have baked many a sculpt or part in my oven with no "toxic" side effects on food afterwards. I normally turn the oven off and let it cool naturally to room temp before removing the baked Sculpey and leave the oven door open with the hood fan running for a bit (several minutes) to air it out. I then use the oven as usual for food and have yet to grow a third eye, develop strange tumors or have my penis fall off. I think it's pretty safe as long as you don't use the oven immediately after baking Sculpey.

I don't think it's harmful. It's just that these days these jobless scientists come forward and declare eatables such as french fries as cancer creating foods! So why the hell risk it with HCl fumes?! I have a separate convection oven that I got from a family at church. They were planning to throw it away! Good for me

I was going to say that is hasn't killed me yet. But they did have to bring me back from the dead back in January.
