No money for Besta's, build your own!

So I decided I would give building my own display cabinets a try, just because I would rather spend that money on statues than on the display, plus the fact besta dont have the frameless doors anymore. So first things first, I found these doors (Morliden) which are used on the billy bookcases at IKEA. I would of just bought the billy bookcases, but they are only 11 inches deep and I wanted something deeper otherwise most bigger statues wont fit. I then took the specs of the billy bookcases and went to Rona or Home Depot and bought 16 inch wide MDF primed board and built a frame. If you can cut straight, you can do this. Still have to put in the lighting, but it looks good.

Specs are 78"H X 30"W X 16"L
Cost = 2x$40 for the doors
4x$13 per MDF board (depending on how many shelves you want.
Backing was $21

Total was $160

Here is a picture of it. Ill be building another one, let me know if you want more pics of the build itself and Ill take them on the second build.

The quickest way to double your money is to fold it in half and put it back in your pocket.

Nice work mate. always like to see people build their own stuff. Does it fee pretty sturdy? Presumably so otherwise you wouldn't have put all your babies in there!

I plan to build my own in a little while. New house, have the space, so I'm looking to make it custom.

Just about everything I have has been put back in their boxes.
So you built your case to the same measurements as a Besta? Did it save you much money?

Very nice, I prefer custom shelves myself.

Mock setup...Work in progress

Ive also been flirting w/ a dry wall setup. Far right

The main flaw w/ bestas is that the base has little to no weight. I tried to add a bit more weight to the base for better stability.

Not the same measurements as a besta but as the ikea billy bookcase (thats where the doors are from). Absolutely I saved money. One single besta with a glass door here in Canada costs $120 and you would need three of them, $360. I built mine for $160 and its slightly larger (same depth, but taller and wider), so less than half the price.

always go9ng ti be cheaper if you build them yourself no matter what you build. not only that. they will be much stronger and made of far superior materials such as real solid wood/ply wood compared to sh!ty particle board that the Ikas are made of which warps over time. and can break easily.

good job by the way.
