Watching nearmint's video of it-
I think the portrait comes across much better in video than it does in still images. It's not an especially strong likeness (obviously), but I think it was the sculptor trying to capture a specific, idiosyncratic expression of Reeve- and then not quite getting it, that is,
and always has been, the big problem.
Fixing the mouth/lips (and I don't know how much a repaint of that area could overcome the actual sculpt), if they could be fixed, would at least get you a less distracting expression.
If you can accept it (the statue as a whole) as a general, cartoon-shorthand (i.e slightly vague) impression of the actor, it's really not that bad at all.
In fact, as seen in the video, the likeness is actually quite decent in the right side profile.
(Funny that I also feel the same about the substantially more expensive P1/Blitzway Lynda Carter. I think the likeness there still has issues from head on, but works well enough in 3/4's and profiles.)
Also, I wasn't able to tell from the short footage here, but I would be very interested to see how the likeness fares when seen from well above and below eye level.
In the mean time, I've actually warmed up to this quite a bit.
At some point I'm sure some company is going to produce a Reeve statue that will have an uncanny portrait of the actor. But it's not going to be in the next year, and it's not going to be sub $600 when it does arrive.
Till then...
