"Not to Be Sold" or Complimentary stamped Marvel comics

I've found some older info on this, but thought I'd ask it again, to get feedback and because I thought it may be of interest to some here.

Well over a decade ago, I bought a few runs of comics from a third party seller, who was moving them for a prominent, longtime Marvel creator. I ended up with some great stuff. The biggest thrill out of all of it was my ability to fill in many gaps in my Amazing Spider-Man run. I ended up with many doubles, due to my having collected the title from the mid 70's and onward.

There was a period of time, just shy of two years, in the early 1980's, that the books being given to staff were stamped with a "Not to Be Sold" , "Complimentary Copy" boldly on the covers.

I put these to the side, since I had clean copies already.

I am attaching a pic for those of you sadists out there.

My question is, in your opinion, how does this effect value of the books?

Can't say for sure, but I suspect they would be of far less value than unmarked one's, depending on general availability. I've read that in some cases even the presence of an autograph (or too many on one photo or document) can lower the value. Either way, it's got to beat the old practice of comic book shop owners tearing the covers in half and sending the half-covers back to the distributors as vendor returns/credits. Did get a pretty good price on the mutilated books back in the day though... five cents a copy.

I would think there is CGC precedence on this topic somewhere. Surely someone has to have submitted one of these for grading at some point?

They talked about it on this forum 10 years ago. No definite answer, though. But you could always ask there, perhaps even resurrect the thread, since it seems to be the official CGC board.

All it takes is for one or two of these to sell well on eBay for the Millennial fanbase to start going nuts over the latest hyped fad.

Curious to know as well. I have plenty of books with that stamp on it.
