This is one of those movies where I just have to shake my head. I mean, Akira was a movie that succeeded despite being anime at a time when anime was largely disregarded by mainstream American media. It was really thanks in large part to the directing of Katsuhiro Ôtomo that made it the hit it was. It was a perfect storm of simple and dark story, wonderful animation and talented/classic anime voice talents. I just don't know why or how Warner Brothers think they can do better. I always thought there were untouchable properties for remake and this was one of them. I'd rather they make a CGI Smurfs before live action Akira.

Not sure about this one. Akira is a true classic and revolutionized a genre. A live action film would be a tall order, if its even possible without making major alterations.

The big-heads on some of the people in Hollywood. C'mon. The nerve that they think they can come anywhere close. I saw the original in a DC art-house when it first hit in the States and it still stands as one of my most powerful cinematic experiences.

I suppose they'll just throw tons of money at it, sell the toys and pat themselves on the back when the uninitiated line up to buy tickets.
I agree...................

I cant wait to see the movie!

Loved the classic original which came out 20 YEARS AGO so if they want to do it live-action and make it available to 1000x more of the american audience then go ahead.

Never much liked Akira anyway, always found it to be tremendously over-rated, so can't say this bothers me much personally.

AKIRA Movie Back on Track at Warner Bros. with Jaume Collet-Serra Returning to Direct | Collider

Really WB, the directors of Catfish and Paranormal Activity sequels was considered at one point? Also if they are planning to scale down the budget so drastically, why even bother.
