I don't agree, I think that's one of the limitations of photography, where at certain angles feature that stand out in 3D will look flat.
That photo was taken from the same angle as the popular comic-con photo that has been posted many times in this thread, so I think the comparisons are valid.

How are those two the same angle? For argument's sake let's say those are the same angle. You don't see a difference?

Not the same, but much more similar than the other one taken directly from the back, which is not at all comparable.
