The comparison has been made. I remember an article in either Newsweek or Time where they described GRR Martin as the American Tolkien. His writing has a rawer more adult edge. If Tolkien is PG-13, GRRM is a solid R.

As Zurbaran1, stated, these two could not be anymore different from each other. Aside from the R rated themes, Martin created Game of Thrones (Book 1 of A Song of Ice and Fire), with more gritty realism. You'll be able to easily identify with various characters and relate to their plight. Apart from a few character, most are not clearly defined as heroes/villians. This isnt' a tale of the simpl good vs. evil. Martin focuses more on the human element, putting the fantasy elements in the background. Mind you they do play an important role in the saga, but it's just a bit more understated.

I've been checking out all the behind the scenes stuff on demand and this really looks great. The sets and costumes are amazing. It looks like they spent a ton of money and are really looking to do the books justice. The only downside is I am officially overexcited about this.

I've also been rereading the books. I can't believe how much I had forgotten. So many great twists and turns.

Fans of Sparticus I think will love this. 90% of the characters make Batiatus look like a saint.

This is what has me worried a bit. If ratings aren't through the roof, then the series will not be completed. I too think this looks expensive. Look what happned to Rome. They cited the cancellation to production costs. That show was extremely expensive to make for a TV series. Let's hope that the rabid fans of A Song of Ice and Fire can carry it through the beginning while newcommers get acclimated to the intrique of this unique series!

Yeah I'm surprised how much they are gambling on a property that isn't all that well known. They are promoting the hell out of it, so hopefully it works out. The last time I was this nervous was with The Walking Dead, and the worked out pretty well.
