Just bought one last month as my 19 year old one crapped its pants.
The old ones are really low efficiency and worse, I don't think you can get refrigerant for them now if they are low. You aren't supposed to use R-22 anymore.
Mine is a 2 and 1/2 ton and cost just under 3K installed. My house is about 2600 SQ ft bi-level with a coil and blower already installed in the electric heating system.
Costs vary a lot but it wouldn't hurt to get some estimates if for no other reason to put money aside for that inevitable day when your old one drops dead, and it will.
